This is a beautiful image, classically framed and positioned and seductively coloured. And so many of your others in the archive could have similar compliments paid by me. So I would love to have an extended dialogue with you about how you see the pros/cons, art/artiface etc of HDR- I'm SO undecided! I am a fellow Scot/Art College grad., ex-Edinburgh dweller revelling in nostalgia at your images of the north side of town- (I lived near Granton all my youth!) and have now retired to the Western Isles, my last job having been a photography tutor at college. HDR of course solves all the problems of widely differing exposures in the frame, but does it lose delicious, mysterious shadow detail and wide tonal range? does this matter if the end result can be so seductive? Blah, blah- help me here!

Thanks so much for your kind comments on my photography. I'm afraid I can't consider myself an expert on HDR - I only started experimenting with it in January. As with any other aspect of photography, I think you have to use your own judgement - sometimes it's better to leave details hidden in the shadows.

I started using HDR after purchasing a compact camera. I thought it would be a way to extend the range I could capture with it. I was already used to using a DSLR and shooting only in RAW format with all the flexibility that gives you. However, I have found that HDR does not suit some subjects. For example fast moving clouds - or in fact, anything that is moving can be a problem. It is great fun to experiment with it and I am enjoying using the compact camera too. I always use a tripod anyway for my landscape shots - so it's not too much of a hassle to take one with me when I go out with the compact.
